Huel and Lupus Flare Allergens?

Years ago, I had bad health issues with brain fog and gastric problems. They were so bad that I almost lost the amazing job I had been trying to get for such a long time. Consuming Huel helped and basically saved my brain AND my job. I had no idea why. I guessed it was due to fixing vitamin deficiencies.

Turns out I likely have the type of lupus that attacks my brain. Huel Black seems to be the one for helping me stay alive. Other vegan protein powder based foods and some vitamins have lupus allergens that I had no idea were affecting me. Purely Inspired, Deva Multivitamin, etc have at least alfalfa. I even went downhill somewhat when I switched to Soylent RTD, which finally got me the bad lab work that lead to my lupus diagnosis.

Now I just have to ask - does Huel pay mind to keeping the major lupus allergens out of its Black Edition products? Huel is one of the few vegan protein things I can have.

And if it happens to be coincidental, please keep the list of these out. But I also have to ask if any of these may be in Huel Black Edition or Huel Black Edition RTD? I just want to double check:

-alfalfa (100% guaranteed lupus allergen, gives me brain fog)
-echinacea (possible allergen, variable by person)
-spirulina (possible allergen)

Thanks to the Huel team for checking for me. And posting publicly since there’s not a whole lot of lupus Huel posts.

And if the Huel team wants it, here are the food recommendations for lupus: Lupus Lifestyle Changes Advice: In the anti-Inflammatory diet They are written and updated by Dr. Donald Thomas.

Hey there!

Sorry for the delay, here! We are so happy to hear that Huel has helped you manage your condition, and that you’re doing better! Congratulations on getting (and keeping) that amazing job!! Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

We do not use alfalfa, echinacea, or spirulina in our Black Edition products. We do use echinacea in our Daily Greens and Daily Superblend products and spirulina in our Daily Greens powder, so I would recommend avoiding those two products.

While I don’t believe our product developers were looking specifically to avoid lupus allergens, I don’t think we would use any of these ingredients in our meal products (Black Edition, Huel Powder, Essential, etc.) any time soon. These are more apt for a superfood/supergreens product, which is not what we’re trying to achieve with the Black Edition or Huel Powder, which are meant just to provide all the essential nutrients your body needs. We’ve specifically tried recently to remove inessentials and redundancies so that our product is more accessible and less complex, such as eliminating kombucha in the new Black Edition recipe. This makes the Black Edition accessible to those with tea allergies, for example!

Thank you also for sharing this article with us! Based on the article, I think Huel is such a great fit because it’s rich in omega-3s (which is not a priority for companies making pure protein powders) and selenium, it’s gluten-free, and the Black Edition specifically has probiotics.

I’ve passed the article to our Nutrition and Technical Teams, as well, to have a look! Let us know if you have any other questions.
