Changes to Complete Protein

I was lurking the Huel subreddit and noticed that some are talking about changes to Complete Protein, where hemp is being replaced with brown rice protein. Cost aside, what was the rationale behind this and what impact will it have to the amino acid profile? The PDCAA score is about the same between the two.

Just bumping this since the question hasn’t been answered and I’m holding off on placing my order until I hear back.

We are working to get some more information for you, will get back to you on this as soon as possible! Thank you for your patience.

Just wanted to follow up on this

Any updates here? Checked on the site and it seems like you guys are no longer posting the amino acid profile for any of your products.

Hey there! So sorry for the delay! It took a bit to get the results of product testing.

To answer your question, the shift to brown rice protein did change the amino acid profile slightly. However, the protein is still complete and actually has a slightly better Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score than the original formula. This is the current profile:

mg EAAs per 29g serving (Vanilla):

Tryptophan: 187
Threonine: 709
Isoleucine: 767
Leucine: 1614
Lysine: 1351
Methionine: 209
Phenylalanine: 998
Valine: 938
Histidine: 546

For reference, this was the split in the old recipe(s):

Tryptophan: 180 (166 in V2.0)
Threonine: 680 (617 in V2.0)
Isoleucine: 830 (758 in V2.0)
Leucine: 3030 (3134 in V2.0)
Lysine: 2100 (same in V2.0)
Methionine: 500
Phenylalanine: 960
Valine: 950 (859 in V2.0)
Histidine: 480 (437 in V2.0)

We moved from hemp protein to brown rice protein as it improved both the flavor of the product and the sustainability of our supply chain. Hemp protein can also pose a problem for those in the military or other professions where hemp is prohibited.

Hope this helps!

Thank You! Pretty huge drop in Leucine but not a deal breaker for me.

Do you have the updated amino acid profile for Black as well? I know it has gone through some reformulations.

To clarify, the change in leucine is not due to the switch to hemp protein, but rather that we decided additionally to remove L-lysine, L-leucine, and L-methionine from the new recipe. This is because the additional amino acids we added were contributing to a bitter aftertaste.

This is the amino acid split of the Vanilla Black Edition Powder:

mg EAAs per 90g serving:

Tryptophan: 423
Threonine: 1386
Isoleucine: 1535
Leucine: 3055
Lysine: 2415
Methionine: 531
Phenylalanine: 2028
Valine: 1938
Histidine: 1174

Apologies–the above amino acid profiles are for the product in the EU. We’re still testing product manufactured in the US (both Black Edition Powder and Complete Protein).

Ok, thank you for trying, much appreciated.

So sorry that we do not yet have testing available! I will keep an eye on this and get back to you as soon as possible!

I’ve lost any hope of this but thank you anyway! Not your fault-
