Hot & Savoury update - Real talk

I don’t mind the change to the packets, but I just reordered my Thai green curry- which I have eaten every day for lunch for months now- and the recipe has totally changed. I LOVED the Thai green curry before and the new texture and recipe is gross. It honestly tastes like a slightly different color of the yellow curry pots, just without noodles. I am absolutely devastated- I had finally figured out meal prep for the work week where everything was easy and delicious. I don’t like any other flavours either, so I guess thats the end of my huel orders.

Be on the lookout for our upcoming flavor, “We just threw something together last minute idk :see_no_evil_monkey:

But you have a point here–more general naming practices is another avenue we could consider!

So sorry to hear that your Thai Green Curry tasted off!! Can you elaborate on what was different about the taste (salty, bitter, sweet, etc.) and texture (thick, thin, lumpy, etc.)?

While we are updating the grains recipe (see here), this changeover is not due to happen for the Thai Green Curry until late June. If you could send us an email at support@huel.com with your order number and the batch details on your packs, that would be much appreciated!!

Ill do my best- the curry just doesn’t taste like green curry to me anymore. The color is paler of the powder as well. I looked at the difference in the ingredients (a bit obsessively) since I had a single bag of the old recipe still- and wondered if the lower quantity of coconut milk powder is changing the “curry” taste. It feels blander and the new texturized protein chunks are the weird squeaky feeling food that I really dislike. I can handle a few of them- but it feels like they dominate the food completely. I also miss the quinoa- it added a nutty taste (I think thats where it was coming from) that was so nice. It still has a slight kick of heat but the rest of it is just not reminiscent of actual green curry to me anymore.

Technically- the way the new recipe is? Id probably eat it occasionally, every few weeks, if my husband bought it and it was there (this is the way I feel about most the other options). But I wouldn’t have it as a regular meal and I wouldn’t order it for myself anymore. Right now, with the old recipe I eat it every day for lunch during the week. Ive done this for probably more than six months now and Im still love it.

@Hope_Huel I emailed support around the new recipe but I haven’t heard back yet. Does that mean there is a slight chance I could still get ahold of some of the old Thai green curry recipe?

No, apologies, you’ve found yourself on the US Huel Forum, but you can find the UK forum here! The information on this post is specific to the US.

The grains changeover has already happened in the UK/EU, so it’s not possible to get the old recipe.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re not enjoying the new grains! Thanks for sending us an email. We’ll make sure to pass along the feedback, and our Customer Experience Team can discuss further!

Hey Mark, EU user here, firstly thanks for Huel, it’s cracking stuff, regular user now for a year, really helps with diet plans & as I’m on the move a lot a decent meal for work/hiking/skiing/biking.

But WHY discontinue mac n cheese??? I get it, some feedback from people who follow the 5 min prep guideline is bad, but leave it 10-15 mins & the consistency gets WAY better. Feel it’s “bland” compared to melted cheddar? Grind a touch of chilli in… I prep in the morning & use a SIGG meal flask, it’s perfect by lunch…

Easily my favourite Huel meal. I can see all over here & reddit the comments are piling up with disappointment too. Please return it, I’m on my last pack! Smashes chick n mushroom, which is awful, sorry…

The new pots are great, particularly LOVE the spicy chicken, agree with your pouches idea too.

Just one last suggestion, maybe look into waxed paper pouches though? Eco packaging is a big deal in Germany, Austria etc as we religiously seperate plastic waste.

As for mac n cheese again, Shoreditch vegan cheese shops can likely help with recipes, some awesome ones there!

All the best!

Chicken alfredo is also one of my favorites right along side mac and pasta B (why does everything I love always get discontinued *cough Huelwear cough). I ordered as much of all 3 flavors after the announcement of them being discontinued and during the outlet sale. I wish alfredo would have been an option during the sale.

Hey Will! So glad to hear that Huel has been a good meal option on the go!!!

Cheesy/creamy flavors were not performing well, which meant continuing to produce them in all markets wasn’t sustainable. You can read a more in-depth explanation here.

I’ll pass along this feedback! I believe this flavor is unlikely to return, however.

Understand your concerns around sustainable packaging! However, plastic is the most efficient material we can use to package Huel. It protects our products from damage and helps retain their nutritional value, giving them a longer shelf life and minimizing food waste. It’s lightweight and strong, meaning that we only need to use the minimum amount of material necessary which in turn reduces carbon emissions associated with production and transport. In many cases, if we were to use paper, the carbon footprint of the packaging would be equal or greater than the plastic, and the protective barriers required for the paper to preserve the product would result in the paper being unable to be recycled. To utilise the benefits of plastic packaging and reduce the environmental impacts, we need to focus on using and maximising recycled content and facilitating recycling wherever possible. We are working to make our plastic packaging 100% recyclable, using plastics that are commonly collected for recycling, and clearly labelling our packaging to show the options for recycling.

I’ll pass along your feedback regarding the Chick’n Alfredo (and Huelwear)! Unfortunately, we had run out of stock of the Chik’n Alfredo Cups quite a while before deciding to do the Outlet sale for our remaining pouches.

A bit late to the party, just found out about this site, seems like a great idea.

I am super disappointed in removing the mac and cheese and the bolognaese flavors. They are both awesome!!! You should really revisit these decisions, a little salt and pepper also makes a difference…

As for the big bags, I know its already too late, but if people cant take the time to measure out and appropriate amount of contents in a scoop, that sounds like a user problem, its too bad the people who like that delivery method can no longer take advantage of it. Perfection is then enemy of good enough, these are just meals and dont need to be perfect or consistent down to the last molecule

Have I over mixed something and come up short towards the end of the bag? Sure. Was it a big deal in continuing to purchase, Nope. I learned to take about 5 seconds and make sure a scoop isnt all powder or all pasta, honestly not very difficult.

More choice is always better, I mean what is the real cost of keeping a lower performing flavor around? I will bet it is close to zero…

Thanks,

I’ll pass along the feedback that the Mac & Cheeze is missed! The Pasta Bolognese will be coming back (with a new and improved recipe) in a Meal Pack and Cup! You can read more here.

The problem is more to do with gravity–the powder will naturally sift to the bottom over time, and this can be a problem no matter how much you shake the bag or scoop from the bottom. Along with taste and texture differences, this can lead to nutritional inconsistencies, such that the nutrition facts on the bag don’t line up with what you’ve scooped. Totally understand that it’s possible to get pretty consistent servings with the large pouches once you get the hang of it, but part of our job is to make things easier on customers wherever possible! If people have a negative first experience with a product, they may not be willing to continue with it, and Repeat Rates are a big data point that we pay attention to.

We want to provide our customers with as much choice as possible, which is why we’re constantly releasing new flavors (Japanese Curry, Thai Noodles, Szechuan Noodles, etc.). But we want to make sure that our choices and offerings are high-quality as well. We use a few different metrics to determine what that means, which you can read more about here.

All that said, we’re so sorry for the disappointment surrounding the transition and the delisting, and we really appreciate you taking the time to give us this feedback!

Hi,

I’ll be direct: the new Hot & Savoury formula is pushing me toward your competitors for the first time in years because you’ve eliminated something crucial: texture variety.

For months, I’ve been happily cycling through 3 meals:
Thai Green Curry, Mexican Chili and Madras
(I avoid fast carbs, so pasta-based recipes aren’t an option for me).

Each had a nice original taste and a different texture.

With the new recipes, all 3 feel identical in my mouth.
And you’ve added so much rice that every recipe looks and feels the same (apart from the color mostly).

I never got bored cycling daily through the 3 old recipes for more than a year.

Now, after less than 2 weeks with the new recipes, I’m already bored cycling through what feels like the same meal in different colors and I can’t eat one more of those meals…

So I’ll have to look for alternatives with your competitors and bring my orders down to a third of what I used to order, just to keep some variety in my daily meals.

Variety in food is a basic physiological need.
Why would you take that away?

I can see the upside of the small packs (even though I was fine with the big pouches).

But you’ve created a new problem by completely changing 3 winning recipes into one boring recipe in 3 different colors with just slightly different tastes (but mostly the same experience).

As a result, it’s forcing me to reduce my future orders to 33% of the amount I usually order, so that I can buy the other 66% from your competitors (also making my food planning unnecessarily more inconvenient in the process).

Thanks for reading this feedback.
And thanks for all the cool stuff you’ve done so far.

I hope you solve that problem quickly so that I can go back to recommending you to my friends.

Oli

Hey Oli!

We’re sorry to hear that you’re not enjoying the new Grains recipes! We take all feedback on board here, so if you could reach out to support@huel.com with the batch details on your Meal Packs so we can send this data to our technical team, that would be great!

Just to add some context for these changes: recently, we’ve needed to reevalute our Hot & Savoury line, as it’s suffered in terms of repeat rates, meaning many people try Hot & Savoury Huel and simply never come back (more info here and here). As a business, this was a problem, some might refer to it as a leaky bucket.

Now, among our H&S flavors, grains-based flavors were even less popular than our pastas, likely because they’ve not met expectations. This means these flavors were performing poorly in a product category that already needed some assistance.

One of the biggest complaints with these flavors was texture, so we made the decision to reduce the quinoa and reduce flaxseed, as both ingredients contributed to that slimy, gel-like texture our Grains had (thus, the increased rice). In terms of flavor, we’ve worked to make this more authentic to the respective dishes, and we’ve added vibrant vegetables like green beans, adzuki beans, and sweetcorn make every meal look and taste better.

Of course, we may need some more time to see if these changes have had the desired impact, but a change was definitely in order. Our intention was not to remove variety, but to make our grains-based recipe a better experience on the whole.

That said, we sincerely thank you for reaching out and providing us with this feedback! I’ll definitely let the team know some more textural variety is desired–hopefully we can use it to be even better in the future!
