Gotcha! The updated versions of the grains products (Thai Green Curry, Yellow Coconut Curry, Mexican Chili, Spicy Indian Curry) will be using rice as the predominant (only) grain now that quinoa is removed. Before it was both quinoa and rice as the grains, now just rice. Flax, though not a grain, is still used in the recipe because it provides omega-3/6 fatty acids, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals.
By the way, sorry if I missed this, but when are these changes expected to happen (in the US?) I’d love to try the savory meal packs again, but not until the quinoa is gone. And does it matter what kind I order (like a single flavor vs a variety box)?
No worries! The heads-up email was sent out to current subscribers of the grains meals, so you may not have received it!
The Mexican Chili is due to change over early June, the Thai Green Curry and Yellow Coconut Curry late June, and the Spicy Indian Curry late July. The Variety Box should change over to the up-to-date (non-quinoa) flavours shortly after the roll out of the new individual flavors, but it likely won’t be exactly aligned.
Please bear in mind that production and shipping surprises can crop up, which could cause this date to change!
I’ve searched everywhere possible trying to find alfredo, but no luck. Please bring back alfredo ![]()
I’m so glad to hear that Pasta Bolognese is coming back. I bought a ton of it when I heard it was going to be discontinued. I look forward to trying the new recipe.
Can’t wait for you to try it! Let us know what you think when you do!
Mac and Cheese not making the cut really bums me out. I didn’t even know about you when I had to make a dairy free switch. Instant foods (dry or freezer) tend to have too much spice for me or have a weird spice that doesn’t sit well with me, so I avoid most of your HS foods. Just the Chk’n and Mushroom for me. I would have loved to have tried the Mac and Cheese. If there is a way to order from one of your locations that still has it and have it shipped here to the states, please let me know.
I like the pots and meal packs. The one thing I liked with the bag was mixing a scoop of one with a scoop of another.
You could do chili Mac pots or packs and just bring back the old Mac n cheese mixed with Mexican chili and it would be a success, I’m sure of it
The Mexican Chili/Mac & Cheeze combo is a good one!! I’ve passed this suggestion along to the Product Team, so hopefully it’s something they can look into!
Can totally appreciate how the large Hot & Savory pouches offered a little more flexibility! For something like this, I’d recommend just using half a meal pack and decanting the rest in an airtight container!
Sorry for the disappointment here! I’ll pass along the feedback that the Mac & Cheeze is missed!
This isn’t possible, unfortunately, but you could maybe arrange this through a freight forwarding service (or a friend in the UK)!
So far, at least two of the new bags I opened (Mexican Chill and Thai Green Curry) contained at least as much weight as the listed serving size, but the flavor and consistency of the Thai Green Curry was very disappointing. I struggled to finish it.
Mexican Chili was alright, but I prefer the previous version.
But in both instances, the contents did not absorb all the water like they used to. Looks gross now.
Hoping Yellow Coconut Curry is better, but given the thread someone created about it, I’m not holding my breath.
Fortunately, I at least got some of the old version of the Spicy Indian Curry.
Anyway, I’m going to try and eat through the boxes I already opened, but could I return any unopened boxes for a refund? I wasn’t aware you were changing the formula, and I don’t think I will continue ordering if these changes are here to stay.
Hey there!
So sorry to hear that you’re not enjoying the new grains recipes! And sorry that you were not aware of the change! We sent a heads-up to subscribers on May 14th, but you can also read up on the changes and reasoning behind them here: Reddit - The heart of the internet
If you could send the batch details on your pouches to our Customer Experience Team at support@huel.com, so they can pass them to our Quality Team, that would be much appreciated! They can also help you out with an exchange or refund.
The grains content has changed a bit (quinoa is removed) so you might need to re-experiment with the cooking time. Say, letting it cook for 7-10 minutes instead of 5 or using less water.
I want to add some follow-up feedback here, after having had some time for our family to eat the new flavors.
Yellow Coconut Curry: My son and I still aren’t fans, but my wife loves the new flavor even more than she liked the old one. We’ll keep getting it for her. I have a feeling that the rest of us would get over our dislike if we kept eating it, but we have other options, so we probably won’t get to find out.
Spicy Indian Curry: The kids and I like the new iteration at least as much as the old one. We’ll keep getting this for us
Mexican Chili: This flavor has gotten even better than it was before, and everyone in the house likes it. We’ll keep getting it
Also, can I say again how nice it is to have these in single-serving packages? Big win!
So glad to hear that the format and flavours are (mostly) an improvement on the old ones! Thank you for this feedback! ![]()
tl;dr the pack updates are great and I’d love to have all of the pot flavors available in meal packs!
I’m a bit late to the changes but just noticed that some of my most recent flavors were much better than my last batch and did some research, coming across these forums and this article! I love the changes to chick’n & mushroom as well as mexican chili! yellow coconut curry’s new recipe is defo creamier but flavor wise it feels a bit plain and there’s a weird flavor i taste but im thinking i can easily add flavor whereas fixing the texture/creaminess would be harder so
by me overall (maybe im biased because the raisins in the old batch actually won me over after initially being suspicious of their inclusion.) I did feel like it was still decently flax seed heavy and also have concerns with omega 3 absorption because, as far as I’ve researched, the bioavailability is greatly increased when in ground form opposed to whole seed as the seed casing is not easily digested, leaving goodies inside! Not to mention that they get slimy and stuck in my mouth, making them slip around as i try to bite it myself to extract the full nutrients! if they were a pleasant texture id see keeping some whole and maybe some ground but having them whole in there confuses me - if they were all ground would the slimness infiltrate the overall texture more? Edit: covered here, i would think needing less flax overall since it is ground and more bioavailable would be beneficial as the post mentions reducing it but presumably the casing helps contain the slime. i am known for scarfing my food down so a little concerned that i wouldn’t chew enough of the seeds but have been trying to practice eating slower and chewing more so cheers to that doubly it seems
Edit: my thai green curry still has quinoa so it is not the updated recipe. i will withhold feedback for it until i get to try the new recipe!
I have been wondering myself why hands down my favorite flavors were only available in pots. The noodles flavors are absolutely bombbb so I was experiencing the dilemma of whether I should keep them in my subscription, dealing with the increased price per meal and environmental impact or settle with the pack flavors (which as of the update, is actually more doable and less of a settle because they are much better. Still not noodle level for me but damn good.) My main pros of the meal packs were:
- reduced shipping CO2 emissions due to the smaller packing without the pot, making packing efficiency higher.
- reduced storage space consumption in my small living space because of the same reasons.
- reduced packaging waste because as far as i could tell, although made of paper, the pots are likely coated in wax to make them liquid resistant and could also never be cleaned to the appropriate level where they would be recyclable in my area of the US so although paper is being traded for plastic, neither are easily recyclable so the overall reduction in packaging that the packs offer wins out here again. (although it was said here that Huel is always looking into packaging advancements so hope is at least there that something more sustainable could come later! i’d be fine with a simply paper pouch like what single serve sugar packets are made of but im sure this was looked into and assuming the vitamin mix or some other component wouldnt have as long of a shelf life with this packaging, not being hermetically sealed with a metal or wax lining, which is a tradeoff.)
Pots still have the one advantage that they come with the vessel that they’re cooked in so when I would grab & go bring them to work in case the venue didnt have vegan options, i wouldnt have to go asking chefs for a bowl to make my “ramen” in
. So while not preferred for me, they potentially still have a future if people find that worth paying a little more for over a meal pack.
Edit: oh also i believe i have the old version of spicy indian curry as it still says quinoa and has potatoes in the ingredients! two of my orders did overlap, i wonder if i ate the newer version first on accident because i noted a decrease it deliciousness that i was going to discuss but if i have them flipped then great job on the update for that one too! i will have to reorder to confirm ![]()
Hey there!
So glad to hear you’re enjoying the new recipes (apart from the taste of the Yellow Coconut Curry)! I’ll certainly pass along the suggestion for ground flaxseed in the Hot & Savory. The Hot & Savory is an exception here, with most of our products having ground flaxseed or incorporating omega-3s in some other way. Let us know what you think of the new Thai Green Curry and if the Spicy Indian Curry is indeed improved!
I have great news for you on the Pots vs. Meal Packs discussion: we are going to be including all pot flavors in Meal Packs! The Pots will still exist, of course, for the reasons you mentioned. Thank you for your feedback here!
The Bolognese flavor is great! However, the pieces of tomato skin are an unpleasant texture and flavor. Mexican Chili is much improved.
So glad to hear you’re enjoying the Mexican Chili and Pasta Bolognese! And sorry about the tomatoes. If you could pass your batch details and feedback to support@huel.com, so our technical team can keep track of it, that would be great!
