# Preparing H&S without a microwave

Has anyone prepared the meal packets without a microwave? What was your experience? I’d love to use them for backpacking meals but I’m curious about how they cook up with just boiling water instead of a microwave.

There’s usually some mixed feedback on the best cooking method. The boiling water method tends to require a bit more time to cook, but some people prefer it over the microwave method. I have only done this with a kettle and pour in the boiling water, stir it up a bunch - I like to put a little bit of water in the pot first so it doesn’t clump - then close the lid, wait 10 minutes, then stir a bunch again

By closing the lid, do you mean covering it? We don’t recommend screwing the lid on for safety, but apologies if that’s not what you meant!

Yeah I set it on top. I don’t screw it on and create am anaerobic environment or anything.
